Mountainous county in Ulster province in the
NW of the Republic of Ireland, surrounded on
three sides by the Atlantic; area 4,830 sq
km/1,864 sq mi; population (1986) 130,000.
The county town is Lifford; the market town
and port of Donegal is at the head of Donegal
Bay in the SW. Commercial activities include
sheep and cattle raising, tweed and linen
manufacture, and some deep-sea fishing. The
river Erne hydroelectric project (1952)
involved the building of large power stations
at Ballyshannon.
